Part 1: Basic Civil Engineering Interview Questions for Freshers
Q1. What is Civil Engineering?
Answer: Civil Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with design, construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, bridges, dams, canals and other infrastructure. It is one of the oldest engineering branches.
Q2. What are the main types of cement used in construction?
Answer: Main types are:
- OPC – Ordinary Portland Cement – Grade 33, 43, 53
- PPC – Portland Pozzolana Cement – Used for mass concrete
- PSC – Portland Slag Cement – Used in marine structures
- White Cement – For architectural finish
Grade 53 OPC is most common for RCC work.
Q3. What is the difference between OPC and PPC?
Answer:
- OPC sets faster and has higher initial strength. Used in RCC slabs, beams.
- PPC sets slowly but gives better long-term strength. Used in mass concrete like dams, foundations. PPC is cheaper and eco-friendly.
Q4. What is concrete grade M20, M25?
Answer: M stands for Mix. Number stands for compressive strength in N/mm² after 28 days.
M20 = 20 N/mm² strength – Used for normal slabs
M25 = 25 N/mm² strength – Used for beams, columns
M30 and above used for heavy structures.

Q5. What is curing and why is it important?
Answer: Curing is the process of keeping concrete wet for 7-14 days after casting. Water is sprinkled or ponding is done.
Importance: Curing gives strength to concrete. Without curing, concrete cracks and strength reduces by 50%. Minimum 7 days curing is must for OPC.
Q6. What is slump test?
Answer: Slump test checks workability of fresh concrete. Concrete is filled in slump cone and cone is lifted. How much concrete settles down is measured in mm.
- 25-50mm slump = Low workability for roads
- 75-100mm slump = Medium for beams, columns
- 100-150mm slump = High for pumped concrete
Q7. What is reinforcement? Why steel is used in RCC?
Answer: Reinforcement means steel bars placed in concrete. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. Steel is strong in tension. So steel bars take tensile load and concrete takes compressive load. Together it becomes RCC – Reinforced Cement Concrete.
Q8. What is the standard size of brick?
Answer: Standard modular brick size in India is 190mm x 90mm. With mortar thickness 200mm x 100mm x 100mm. Traditional brick size is 230mm x 110mm x 70mm.
Q9. How many bricks in 1 cubic meter?
Answer: With mortar: 1 m³ = 500 bricks approx. Without mortar: 1 m³ = 550 bricks approx. For 10×10 ft room, 9 inch wall, around 5000 bricks needed.
Q10. What is DPC and where is it provided?
Answer: DPC means Damp Proof Course. It is 40-50mm thick layer of 1:2:4 concrete with waterproofing compound. Provided at plinth level to stop water from rising up by capillary action. Without DPC, walls get damp.
Part 2: AutoCAD & Surveying Interview Questions
Ab Civil Engineering Interview Questions for Freshers ka AutoCAD section dekhte hain.
Q11. What is AutoCAD and why civil engineers use it?
Answer: AutoCAD is drafting software used to make 2D and 3D drawings. Civil engineers use it for plans, elevations, structural drawings, detailing. It is faster and more accurate than manual drafting. Commands like LINE, CIRCLE, TRIM, OFFSET are basic.
Q12. What is the difference between AutoCAD and Revit?
Answer:
- AutoCAD is for 2D drafting. Each line is separate.
- Revit is for BIM 3D modeling. If you change wall height, all views update automatically. Revit is used for big projects now.
Q13. What is surveying? Name types of surveying.
Answer: Surveying is measuring land and preparing maps. Types:
- Chain Survey – For small areas
- Compass Survey – Using compass
- Theodolite Survey – For angles
- Total Station – Modern digital survey
- GPS Survey – Using satellite
Q14. What is a benchmark in surveying?
Answer: Benchmark is a fixed point with known elevation above mean sea level. All other levels on site are measured from benchmark. GTS benchmark is established by Survey of India.
Q15. What is least count of dumpy level?
Answer: Least count of dumpy level is 5mm. That means we can measure up to 5mm accuracy. For precise work, auto level with 1mm least count is used.
Part 3: RCC & Structural Questions
Q16. What is cover in RCC? Why is it provided?
Answer: Cover is distance between steel bar surface and concrete surface.
- Slab: 20mm cover
- Beam: 25mm cover
- Column: 40mm cover
- Foundation: 50mm cover
Cover protects steel from corrosion and fire.
Q17. What is development length?
Answer: Development length is minimum length of bar required to transfer stress from steel to concrete. Formula: Ld = Ø × σs / 4τbd. For M20 and Fe415, Ld = 47Ø. Means 12mm bar needs 564mm length.
Q18. Difference between one-way slab and two-way slab?
Answer:
- One-way slab: Length/Breadth ratio > 2. Load goes in shorter direction only. Main steel in shorter direction.
- Two-way slab: L/B ratio < 2. Load goes in both directions. Main steel in both directions.
Q19. What is cantilever beam?
Answer: Beam fixed at one end and free at other end is cantilever. Example: Balcony slab. Maximum bending moment at fixed support. Tension at top, compression at bottom.
Part 4: HR Interview Questions for Civil Freshers
Q20. Tell me about yourself.
Answer: I am [Name], BE Civil graduate from [College] with 8.2 CGPA. During college I did internship at ABC Construction where I learned site execution and AutoCAD. My final year project was on “Green Concrete using Fly Ash”. I am good at AutoCAD, MS Excel and site work. I want to start my career in construction field.
Q21. Why civil engineering?
Answer: I always liked building things. In childhood I used to make house models. Civil engineering gives chance to build real structures that help society. Roads, bridges, buildings – everything we use daily is made by civil engineers. That is why I chose this field.
Q22. What are your strengths and weakness?
Answer: Strength: I am hardworking and learn quickly. I can work in team and handle site pressure. I know AutoCAD and basic estimation.
Weakness: Sometimes I focus too much on details. But I am working on time management to improve this.
Q23. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Answer: In 5 years I want to become a Project Engineer handling independent projects. I will complete PMP certification and learn Primavera. I want to grow with your company and take more responsibilities.
Q24. Are you ready for site job and relocation?
Answer: Yes sir, I am ready for site job. I know civil engineering is field work. I am ready to relocate anywhere in India. I have no problem with living at site or working in shifts.
Q25. What is your salary expectation as fresher?
Answer: As a fresher, my priority is learning and experience. As per company standards and my skills, I expect 3-4 LPA. But I am open for negotiation because growth matters more than starting salary.
Bonus: Technical Test Questions
Q26. Calculate cement bags for 1 m³ of M20 concrete.
Answer: M20 ratio is 1:1.5:3. For 1 m³ concrete:
Cement = 1/5.5 = 0.18 m³ = 0.18 x 1440 = 259 kg
259/50 = 5.18 bags = 6 bags approx.
Q27. What is 1:2:4 concrete?
Answer: It means 1 part cement, 2 part sand, 4 part aggregate by volume. This is M15 grade concrete used for PCC, flooring. Strength is 15 N/mm².
